Why choose this programme?

Are you interested in a programme that opens doors to the labour market? A master's degree in Gender Studies will give you the ability to work independently on issues relating to gender, feminism, gender equality, power and knowledge production in an interdisciplinary way.

A central topic will be the use of gender as an analytical category and a critical perspective on central questions within science, politics, culture, and social issues. As a graduate of this programme, you will possess knowledge and skills that are highly valued within fields such as teaching and research, public administration, NGOs/special interest organizations, and arts and culture.

An interdisciplinary programme

The programme consists of coursework and writing a master’s thesis, each of which provides 60 credits. In the first year of the programme, the focus will be on the coursework, with students taking six courses, each of which gives ten credits. In the second year of the programme, you will write your master’s thesis. The thesis will be based on your own research, and you will be supervised by a member of the academic staff. The subject for the thesis should be chosen in the second semester of the programme. Courses and supervision are offered in English and Norwegian, and the thesis can be written in English, Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

This is an interdisciplinary and flexible programme, in which you have the option of combining courses at the Centre for Gender Research with courses from other units. Over the course of this two-year programme, you will progress from working with general and basic issues, via courses that provide specialisation and knowledge of new areas, to working independently on your master’s thesis. The courses in the first year of the study programme will prepare you, either directly or indirectly, for the work of writing your thesis. During the second year, you will concentrate on your thesis. The topic for the master’s thesis must be chosen in agreement with, and be approved by, the thesis supervisor. Supervision includes assistance in choosing the topic and the main research questions, finding source materials, and help with structure and presentation
